Apple Trees

I've been big on analogies lately, and everyone around me seems to be having relationship problems, so let's try this one: A man is an apple tree. After yelling "MAKE ORANGES!" at him for long enough, does he actually start giving you oranges? No, of course not. He can only give apples.

Women grow and change, but men are forever twelve years old. This is the great dichotomy; God's twisted little joke. He will always chew with his mouth open. He will always leave his dirty socks in the bathroom. He will always forget your birthday. No matter how hard you try, you will fail at trying to change him.

So you accept men for what they are. You abstain from elevating your expectations. You abolish the idea of the perfect man. You refuse to set yourself up for failure.

Do you swear off men forever? No, of course not. Eventually, someone will come along with only a handful of tolerable inadequacies. You accept the sum of his parts, because he's nothing greater than that.

For now, you just relax and have fun. There's no need to settle for some fucked up lunatic just so you can turn him into a project. That's nothing more than self-torture (or self-aggrandization, depending on how you look at it).

Cherish thyself.

    What a bunch of crock!!!

True... there are plenty of differences between women and men... but only the more confined and girdled intellects will choose to consider all of them shortcomings or defects. Great relationships thrive as much on the differences as on the similarities... actually, only the differences will promote personal growth...

Try this analogy... you can have as many of my apples as you want... but if you must have oranges, please go and buy them at the supermarket and come sit under my shade and enjoy them. I will be happy that you are sharing your pleasure with me and you will be eating what you desire. Sure beats being pissed because and apple tree does not produce oranges (duhhh!?).

If you cannot visualize that analogy, try reading D's poem "Desencarnacion"... if you can't understand it or its connection to this subject... I am sure D can help you...

Yes D, I am upset. While Maria has the inherent right to own and believe all the prejudices, distortions and misconceptions her little heart desires, I find it disturbing that she actively tries to enlist others into sharing her point of view.

Writing a blog may be fun and even therapeutic... but it also entails being responsible for its impact on the readers. Passion and wit... regardless of how deep and sharp they might be, do not make generalizations become absolute truths.

I am sorry that Maria's life experiences have turned her into such a sour sarcastic. She should have someone make her aware of the statistical concept of "sampling error"... she is, after all, an example of one...

I'll take your word for it, D. I don't even bother reading his comments.

Maria: If you are not open to the opinion of your readers... why should they be open to yours?

No one has to read if they don't want to.

If the writer is indiferent to his/her audience and their reaction, then, why write?

I don't respond to hostile and antagonistic behavior. SO far I only have that problem with one of the commenters on this blog.
